This site is dedicated to the event that happened at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. My National History Day project about the May 4th shootings at Kent State fits into this year’s theme of conflict and compromise for many reasons. The country was in conflict over the Vietnam War. Protests were common, across college campuses. On April 30, 1970, President Nixon announced his plans to invade Cambodia. He was not interested in any type of compromise. When the National Guard was called in to quiet the protesters at Kent State, no one knew that someone might get hurt. This incident, watched by many on national television, changed the view of war and caused a conflict for many Americans.
"Those few days after Kent State were among the darkest of my presidency" - Richard Nixon thirty-seventh President of the United States serving from 1969 until his resignation in 1974.
