Analysis

This site is dedicated to the event that happened at Kent State University on May 4, 1970.

My National History Day project about the May 4th shootings at Kent State fits into this year’s theme of conflict and compromise for many reasons. The country was in conflict over the Vietnam War. Protests were common, across college campuses. On April 30, 1970, President Nixon announced his plans to invade Cambodia. He was not interested in any type of compromise. When the National Guard was called in to quiet the protesters at Kent State, no one knew that someone might get hurt. This incident, watched by many on national television, changed the view of war and caused a conflict for many Americans.

"You know, you see these bums, you know, blowin' up on the campuses. Listen the boys that are on the college campuses today are the luckiest people in the world, going to the greatest universities, and here they are burnin' up the books, I mean stormin' around about this issue, I mean, you name it- get rid of war, there'll be another one."  Richard Nixon, NY Times May 2, 1970

"Those few days after Kent State were among the darkest of my presidency"  - Richard Nixon  thirty-seventh President of the United States serving from 1969 until his resignation in 1974.

Four students died and nine were wounded. The students who died were Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder. The students who were wounded were Alan Canfora, John Cleary, Thomas Grace, Dean Kahler, Joseph Lewis, Donald Mackenzie, James Russell, Robby Stamps, and Douglas Wrentmore. Dean Kahler was paralyzed in the Kent State Massacre. We still remember this tragic event today. These shootings happened because of the protests against the American invasion into Cambodia.
